What toy should I use to train my dog?
He does not care about treats or toys nearly as much as he cares about sniffing.
When is it safe to let my dog off the leash?
If you have a any kind of long line, um, you can always cut it like this.

I'm looking at my phone and I just stop and let him sniff the thing.
How does my dog know when he can stop?
Oh, not by me telling him to stay, but just because anytime I put him in a sit or a down or on place, he's supposed to stay until I say the release word.
