Answer
The stopping rule in these examples is a learning target rather than a round number. Bullet’s trainer says he wants one good turn. Kodak’s handler ends after a particular heel-and-turn improvement. Louie’s trainer says a difficult down may be the only down repetition of that session because he wants that repetition to be effective. The point is not that every dog needs exactly one repetition; it is that a successful answer should not automatically buy more work.
Quality also needs a definition. Bo’s handler notices less resistance than on the first attempt. King’s lesson argues for a few clear repetitions within play and rest rather than a long flat session. Dutchess and Luna provide additional explicit decisions to finish on a useful response. Different tasks therefore have different endpoints, but each endpoint can be named.
The phrase end on a high note must not become an obligation to keep going until a struggling dog finally succeeds. The related dog-reading and heat concepts can end or change the session first. Nor does one improved repetition demonstrate permanent mastery. A later, appropriately spaced test is a different task. Claims in the older arcs that the last repetition is the one stored in memory are stronger than the observation supports; the draft retains the trainers’ stopping rationale without presenting a special memory law as established fact.
Owner takeaway
Before practice, decide with the trainer what a useful successful repetition looks like. When it arrives, deliver the intended release or break; do not add repetitions merely to reassure yourself.
Across the cases
bo
The handler marks a down with less resistance than the earlier one, making a quality comparison rather than merely counting completed positions.
with a down good boy because there's a lot less resistance on that one than on the first one and

Bullet
The current transcript states the target as one good turn. That is the declared question for the block.
Just wanted to get one good turn.

Kodak
The trainer says he is packing up after a high point and names the successful heel-and-turn behavior. The milestone is specific.
pack him up because i want to end on that really really high note where he he did perfectly um

he finally he stayed with me in the heel and he stayed through that left turn that i took

Louie
The trainer allows several minutes before another down and accepts that there may be no second one in that session.
so it might be four or five minutes before i try to get him to do a down again or longer it might be the only down rep i do because i want that one rep to be as effective as possible

King
A few clear repetitions and higher handler energy are preferred to a larger volume of dull work. The 80/20 wording is a heuristic, not a measured ratio.
basically it's better to like get the 20 yeah i mean that makes 80 of the impact for that session and then quit go home

Because I'd rather have like longer breaks in between each dog but higher energy from the trainer

Dutchess
The handler explicitly chooses to end on a high note. Other remarks in the same sequence still acknowledge work to reinforce at home.
you know for the most part she's doing good let's end on a high note duchess sit

neutrality so when she's a little distracted she won't run up to somebody um she knows we're sitting her down her heel right so she knows everything we're just having to reinforce it a little bit and of course we'll have to reinforce it when we get to the house to see that

Luna
A useful response to passers-by is selected as an endpoint while the same session recognizes insufficient rest and weather-related limitations.
Again, cause I didn't give her a huge break. She's, her coat's too fluffy for this weather.

How the trainers explain it
The trainers explain that a clear response followed by meaningful relief or play can be more valuable than repeated demands. Ending the block preserves that consequence and limits additional load. The record does not establish permanent learning from one event or a universal optimum repetition count.

This is a synthesis of the cited training record, not a controlled comparison or a measurement of the dog’s internal state.
Questions and answers
Does one good repetition prove the skill is finished?
No. It can answer the question for that block. A later test in an appropriate context is still needed; the stopping rule does not establish lifelong reliability.

Must I get a good repetition before stopping?
The wider record makes state and physical conditions reasons to stop or simplify. Luna’s source recognizes inadequate rest. A positive endpoint is a planning preference, not permission to push through a deteriorating situation.

Teaching outline
Choose a meaningful success criterion before the exercise, and let achieving it earn a real end to that block.
State one observable target before viewing a block. Identify the moment it is met, what follows, and whether another repetition would add information or merely repeat the success.

Questions for intake
When your dog succeeds, does practice end, change into play, or immediately become more demanding?
Still to establish
Which examples most clearly show ending the block while preserving recovery and motivation?
Source limitations
Selected Bullet and Kodak quotations were copied from current cues to replace mismatching historical wording. No claim is made that the last repetition alone is stored.
Quotations are copied verbatim from the current local transcript, including transcription errors. Exact text matching does not independently verify the audio or identify a speaker.
The dossier is derived from existing Tier 1 and Tier 2 research; its broad-concept sighting cap may omit further examples. Dogs covered records reviewed dossier context, not a claim that every dog supplies equally strong evidence.
Equipment levels, inferred motives and outcome claims describe the cited case; they are not universal settings, diagnoses or independently established results.
