Fear and confidence

Labels such as confident or nervous can conceal the details that make a comparison useful. Look for named situations and specific responses, and distinguish a trainer’s interpretation from what you can see and hear.

The starting question

How can I look for confidence without guessing how a dog feels?

Describe what the dog can do, investigate or return to under the conditions shown. The recordings discuss space, recovery and revisiting a difficulty; a quiet body alone does not establish confidence.
